Rolando Burgos Elevated to IEEE Fellow
Dec 11, 2025

The Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) at Virginia Tech is proud to announce that Professor Rolando Burgos has been named an IEEE Fellow, one of the most prestigious honors in the engineering profession. This elevation recognizes his exceptional contributions to the development of high-power-density power electronics and to advancing the stability and dynamic performance of electronic power systems.
Election to IEEE Fellow is reserved for individuals with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in an IEEE field of interest. Less than 0.1% of IEEE’s voting members are selected each year, making the distinction a career-defining milestone.
Professor Burgos has long been a leading force in pushing the boundaries of modern power electronics. His research spans high-frequency, high-power-density converter design; electromagnetic compatibility; and system-level modeling and control of next-generation power conversion architectures. His work has played a critical role in enabling compact, efficient, and resilient power systems for applications ranging from renewable energy integration to transportation electrification and future smart grids.
At CPES, Professor Burgos leads research that blends deep theoretical insight with practical engineering impact. His contributions have not only advanced academic understanding but have also helped industry partners adopt new technologies that improve reliability, efficiency, and scalability in real-world systems. His leadership, mentorship of students, and collaborations across government, industry, and academia have strengthened CPES’s global reputation as a premier center for power electronics research.
“We are thrilled to see Rolando receive this well-deserved recognition,” said Richard Zhang, CPES director. “His work continues to shape the future of power electronics and inspire the next generation of engineers.”
CPES congratulates IEEE Fellow Rolando Burgos on this outstanding and well-earned honor.
