Celebrating the Graduation of Tyler McGrew, PhD
Dec 16, 2025

CPES is proud to congratulate Tyler McGrew on the successful completion of his PhD in Electrical Engineering, under the guidance of Professor Qiang Li.
Tyler’s dissertation, “Modeling and Mitigation of EMI from Near-Field Coupling Effects in Front-End Power Supplies,” addresses a critical challenge in modern power electronics. As technologies such as renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, data centers, and communication networks continue to demand higher power density and efficiency, designers increasingly rely on high-frequency power converters enabled by advanced semiconductor materials. While these advances improve performance, they also introduce new challenges—particularly in managing electromagnetic interference (EMI).
A major difficulty in EMI design is that unwanted electrical noise is often not fully understood until late in the development cycle, when hardware prototypes are tested in the lab. This can lead to costly redesigns and delays. Tyler’s research tackles this problem head-on by focusing on an often-overlooked source of EMI: near-field electric and magnetic coupling between components. By incorporating these interactions into analytical and simulation-based models, his work enables more accurate prediction of EMI behavior early in the design process. This proactive approach allows mitigation strategies to be implemented sooner, improving reliability and reducing development risk.
Reflecting on his time at CPES, Tyler shared:
“My journey here has been a wonderful experience. CPES is a truly special place where so many like-minded and talented researchers can work together and learn from one another. It has been a great pleasure for me to become a part of this community.”
Following his graduation, Tyler has joined Delta Electronics as a Member of R&D Staff, where he will continue contributing to cutting-edge power electronics research and development.
Congratulations, Dr. McGrew! We wish you continued success in your career and look forward to seeing the impact of your work.
