Congratulations Matthias Spieler, Ph.D.
Aug 06, 2026
CPES proudly congratulates Matthias Spieler on earning his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech. Under the guidance of faculty advisor Rolando Burgos, Matthias successfully completed his dissertation, Design and Assessment of an Embedded Die PCB-Based Traction Inverter, advancing technologies that can improve the efficiency, power density, and affordability of electric vehicles.
Matthias' research focused on developing high-power-density traction inverters using embedded-die printed circuit board (PCB) technology and silicon carbide (SiC) power devices. His work demonstrated how innovative packaging and sensing approaches can significantly reduce inverter size while improving electrical and thermal performance. Among his contributions was the development of a planar Rogowski-coil current sensor integrated directly into the circuit board, offering a lower-cost alternative to conventional current-sensing methods. Using these innovations, he designed and demonstrated a 173 kW traction inverter that achieved a power density of 100 kW/L, meeting a major industry target for next-generation electric vehicle power electronics.
Reflecting on his time at CPES, Matthias shared:
"The time at CPES sharpened my understanding of the field of power electronics, set a high standard for rigorous work, and helped me grow to become a better engineer. The skills and discipline developed throughout my PhD will remain of lasting value."
Following graduation, Matthias joined Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) as a Senior Applications Engineer, where he continues to apply the technical expertise and problem-solving skills developed during his doctoral studies.
The entire CPES community congratulates Matthias on this outstanding achievement and wishes him continued success in his professional career.
