CPES Proposed Multi-Phase Buck

Year: 1998
In 1997, Virginia Tech was invited by Intel to investigate possible alternative ways of addressing power delivery to the future generation of microprocessors. Within the first six months of the investigation, researchers at CPES had proposed to Intel a multi-phase buck converter as a solution to the future generation of processors. What is demonstrated in this picture is that with this particular approach, one does not necessarily have to increase the number of semiconductor devices and at the same time, the magnetic components could be reduced and the output "bulk" capacitor could be dramatically reduced and at the same time, the stringent voltage regulation requirement satisfied.
