CPES Industry Advisory Board Meeting, November 1, 2022

Dec 07, 2022

The CPES Industry Advisory Board (IAB) is made of representatives from all Principal and Principal Plus Member companies, as well as select representatives from the Associate Member companies. The primary role of the IAB is to represent the interests of Industry Members in the CPES research programs as well as advise the CPES director and faculty members on industry trends, key challenges and programmatic matters.

We provide these notes to give insight into the issues and ways the IAB contribute to the success of the center.

CPES IAB met on November 1st at 10:00am ET (US) and 8:00pm ET (US). There were 31 participants across the two sessions representing 24 different member companies.

The meeting opened with a welcome from IAB Chair Peter Barbosa, Delta Electronics who reviewed the role of the IAB, who makes up the IAB, and important recent activities of the group. He also announced that there will be elections at the April 2023 IAB Meeting. We'll elect new representatives from Associate Member companies and address some changes to the IAB Executive Committee.

CPES Director Rolando Burgos then led an overview of the center including changes in Research Faculty, research funding for FY22, industry consortium status, industry and government sponsored projects, CPES Arlington Lab expansion, and research output from the mini-consortium program (PMC, HDI, and WBG-HPCS).

Narayan Rajagopal, Chair of the 2023 CPES Annual Conference, presented details of the next conference including invited keynote and tutorial speakers, a tentative agenda, and new features being considered. Notably, the conference will take place April 3rd - 5th (save the date!) and will be in-person with many events live-streamed online.

CPES Industry Consortium Membership Fees was the next topic with Rolando Burgos describing the history of the membership fees compared to the cost of funding students. While the cost of supporting a student has increased by more than 20% in the past 10+ years, membership fees have seen only a minor adjustment. Meanwhile, cumulative inflation has grown more than 25% in that time. New membership fees for all levels were discussed with a planned roll-out in 2024. This means that all current members have at least one more renewal before they would see any fee changes. CPES envisions the new fees will allow us to continue world-class education, leadership and training on power electronics.

Finally, Dennis Grove, Industry Program Director, showed the newest benefit to our members - a page on the CPES website where member companies may post their jobs and internship for viewing by CPES students, other members, and non-members.

The IAB is an important part of what makes CPES successful. The interaction between industry and academic researchers and the guidance provided by member representatives is essential to keep CPES working towards topics that matter in the real-world. We could not continue to create innovative and impactful solutions without the IAB's involvement.

Thank you all for your support of CPES!
